"The integrity of sound. That is where music starts."
Saxophonist Kika Sprangers (Nijmegen, 28 September 1994) moves her audience with her lyrical, melodic way of playing and characteristic sound. Through her colorful and fascinating compositions, she finds her voice to express herself and tells a powerful story to her listeners. Her authentic music has undertones of serenity and melancholy, enriched by royal harmonies that are complemented by solid grooves. In the Netherlands, she is recognized as one of the finest young talents in contemporary jazz.
In 2016, Sprangers completed her bachelor studies under the tutelage of Toon Roos and Marc Scholten (lead alto of the Metropole Orchestra) at the Utrechts Conservatorium. She was awarded distinction (9 with honors) for her final exam concert in Tivoli Vredenburg. She took lessons and masterclasses with among many others Bob Sheppard, Bob Mintzer, Mark Guiliana and Jasper Blom. During her musical studies she caught the eye of Martin Fondse (Buma Boy Edgar Award 2017) who selected her as the leader of the saxophone section in the "Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest" (NJJO). They have toured many countries and have played in several prominent jazz festivals and performance venues such as North Sea Jazz Festival, Bimhuis and King's Place (London). Furthermore, they frequently worked with the Metropole Orchestra. The album "A Rosa" was released in 2016 in collaboration with classical orchestra the Nederlands Jeugd Orkest under the musical direction of Steffen Schorn and Martin Fondse. During the project "Jong Metropole" the NJJO worked alongside renowned conductor, composer and arranger Jules Buckley (Metropole Orchestra). Multi-Grammy Winner and Sprangers’ conductor at the NJJO and Metropole Orchestra, Jules Buckley said this about her: “Good solos and an excellent and concentrated performance spirit. Great leadership and very open and relaxed to constructive comments in regard to ensemble playing, blend and balance. She’s got a great future coming.”
Sprangers is drawn to working in a variety of musical settings. She is currently a member of the Utrecht Jazz Archipel (the Jazz Orchestra of Utrecht), performs in the theatre show New York Round Midnight and plays in a trio alongside cellist Jörg Brinkmann and pianist Martin Fondse. In addition, she studies composition with Monk Award winner Ilja Reijngoud. Sprangers' main focus is her quintet and Large Ensemble (an extension of her quintet including three singers, bass clarinet, french horn, trompet and flute). Prominent performances of her ensemble took place at inJazz festival Rotterdam, Tivoli Vredenburg Cloud Nine Utrecht and the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam.
In February 2017, she released her first EP "Leaves of Lily" with her own compositions. This EP was given a four out of five star review in "Het Parool" (a major national newspaper) where Sprangers was described as "a personality with a mature sound, flair and dedication". This year Kika Sprangers has been elected as Young Vip 2018 (best new jazz artist) by well regarded Dutch jazz bookers and musicians. This offers Sprangers and her ensemble an extensive tour throughout The Netherlands and her first gig at the North Sea Jazz Festival. For her special performance in Motion Blue Jakarta, Sprangers (alt & soprano sax) will be joined by Manuel Wouthuijsen (keys), Danny van Ruitenburg (bass), Willem Romers (drums) & Eric Brugmans (guitar).
