Nial Djuliarso Swing Machine

Award-winning jazz pianist Nial Djuliarso was born on February 5th, 1981 in Jakarta, Indonesia. He lived in the United States for 20 years. He received his bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music (2004), Artist Diploma from Juilliard School (2006), and Master’s of Music Degree from New York University (2018). He has played and studied with Kenny Barron, Richie Vitale, Wynton Marsalis, Ernestein Anderson, Benny Golson, Rufus Reid, Peter Bernstein, Billy Drummond, Alan Broadbent, Danilo Perez, among others. Nial has performed all over the world, including Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall), Kennedy Center, Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Rhythm Alley (Taipei).

Nial loves swinging pianists, such as Oscar Peterson, Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones. With the recent resurgence of the Indoswing community in Jakarta, where he is also a part of, he decided to form a swing band to play for the lindy hop community in Jakarta. He calls the band Nial Djuliarso Swing Machine with Nial on piano, Filipus Cahyadi on drums, Jojo Prawira on clarinet/saxophone, Kevin Leman on guitar, Ferdinand Chandra on bass, Ignasius Angga Wijaya on trumpet, Evan Sinaga on trombone, and Nadine Bethbeder on vocal.The band’s repertoire includes the music of artists like Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Bing Crosby, Harry James, Jean Goldkette, Tommy Dorsey, Fletcher Henderson, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, George Gershwin, Billie Holiday, and many more.
